Description of Activities
Since 1983, The Children's Family House Society of British Columbia, doing business as Ronald McDonald House Charities of British Columbia and Yukon (RMH BC&Y) has succeeded in providing a comforting home and circle of support to over 25,000 families as their seriously ill child faces a medical crisis. Our families travel hundreds or thousands of kilometers to ensure their sick child has access to necessary and often urgent, life-saving pediatric care only available in Vancouver at BC Children's and BC Women's Hospitals. Today, RMH BC & Y is at a tipping point where the need to serve more families is higher than the space and resources we have to offer them. The situation is resulting in us turning away over 500 families each year who urgently need our support. Despite our expansion in 2014 from a 13-bedroom home to a brand new 73-bedroom facility, 575 steps away from BC Children's and BC Women's Hospital, care teams at the hospital campus routinely have to advise families that RMH BC & Y is full. With few alternatives available, these stressed-out families are plunged into finding a home away from home close to their sick child in a large city they don't know well. Recent provincial projections show we're going to need more spaces in the next few years to even come close to meeting the need. We are looking for community leaders to help support our dream of building a new House adjacent to our current House, to serve more families. In order to do that, we need to fundraise $96M with the goal of breaking ground in early 2026 and welcoming more families by the spring of 2028. together, let us help our families solve the challenge of accommodation close to the hospital where their sick child is being treated.
