Advocacy related to the reapplication of the Garnet Valley Mine Permit Reapplication, specifically, that the Province deny the reapplication for the gravel mining permit at and around 27600 Garnet Valley Road. Garnet
Valley represents an emerging economic hub rooted in agriculture, tourism, and experiential business. These
sectors provide stable, long-term value, support local employment, and encourage investment in the region. A
gravel mine, by contrast, represents a short-term extractive use that risks devaluing existing businesses,
discouraging future investment, and eroding the very qualities that make the area economically viable.
Equally concerning is the continued lack of local support for this project. The proposal has faced consistent
and well-documented opposition from the District of Summerland, the snpink’tn (Penticton) Indian Band, local
businesses, and residents.
The environmental and cultural sensitivity of Garnet Valley has also been clearly established. The area
provides important habitat for species at risk and supports ongoing conservation and restoration efforts. In
addition, its significance to the syilx people has been repeatedly and clearly articulated by the snpink’tn Indian
Band. As we have previously stated, development of this nature is incompatible with both ecological
stewardship and the Province’s stated commitments to reconciliation.
