BOMA has been working with the Province to help the Built Environment achieve the ambitious carbon reduction targets set out in the CleanBC plan. We seek to provide further assistance to the industry to help transform it to a low carbon economy by using direct assistance programs and supporting various innovative tax policies that encourage building retrofits such as Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE). To facilitate climate resilience investments in buildings, owners need access to their building's utility data. We are asking the Province to help with requiring utilities to provide that data. The Province is reviewing options to regulate building emissions and efficiency including building performance standards and we are engaged with the Province to provide our input.

The Province of BC is consulting with stakeholders on the topic of supporting BC small businesses. BOMA BC is engaging in these consultations, and specifically, providing feedback on how to support small business tenants in the lower mainland facing rising and unexpected operating costs as a result of the existing property assessment system. This includes discussion of tax deferrals or tax cuts for small business, introduction of a split assessment, and small business grants. Supporting small business also entails safety and security of workers, tenants and businesses in the downtown core. Issues of crime, vagrancy, vandalism and public safety are becoming increasingly concerning for BOMA BC members and we will be advocating to the Province for solutions within their jurisdiction.
