Further details and positions are under review / development at the Association, but CanGEA will be reviewing the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Regulation, the Fuel Switch GHG Offset Protocol, the Greenhouse Gas Emission
Control Regulations, and potentially other regulations to determine if and what amendments may be appropriate to ensure incentives or benefits offered to other energy sources are inclusive of geothermal energy.

Intending to continue advocacy for a simpler, streamlined permitting process for geothermal projects. This may include a simpler, more user-friendly application portal; tailoring the process to the specifications of geothermal projects; allocating greater resources to accelerate permit processing and timelines; reducing the number of steps in the review process; increasing the number of available permits, or other actions to speed up the permitting process.

Seeking regulatory parity for the geothermal industry broadly. More specifically, one way this can be achieved is by making additional amendments to the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Regulation (GGRR) to include geothermal as a prescribed undertaking.

Since our most recent letter, we have found the GGRR to have been updated. Incentives (up to $5 million to expend on feasibility and development costs) for prescribed undertakings have been removed.
There are additional benefits to being a prescribed undertaking in the latest update of the GGRR. The ability to undertake these actions under a prescribed framework inherently provides some advantages (e.g., regulatory clarity, streamlined approval processes, etc.), which geothermal is still excluded from. At the very least, it is important that legislators and regulators consider providing equitable visibility for our industry.
