Request for the development and implementation of a British Columbia Poverty Reduction Plan. This plan to include but not be limited to: increased government financial support for families living below the poverty line, increased government financial support for child care, increased government services to address health issues.

Request that government increase budgets for building schools and provide to school districts the funding needed to support portable classrooms that are required because of inadequate capital funding that does not meet the needs of the growing student enrolments. The BC Teachers' Federation is opposed to students being required to bring their own technological devices to school and request that government provide adequate funding to districts to equip and support teachers and students with the necessary, up-to-date technological resources. In addition we request that the government fully fund the Next Generation Network since it is the ministry's expectation that the new curriculum will include technology. Request that the curriculum implementation timelines for the entire K-12 curriculum be reconsidered and pushed back for a minimum of one additional year and that adequate resources and support for teachers be provided. Request to adopt a province-wide sanctuary school policy for all public schools to enable all children and youth to register and attend school regardless of the provision of the paperwork and documentation required by regulation. This to uphold all children's and youth's human right to an education. Request for a meeting with Minister of Education to discuss core competencies in Ministry's draft curriculum and their appropriate use. Request that government enact legislation or regulations that would require superintendents, secretary-treasurers and deputy superintendents to disclose on an annual basis: 1. Affiliations with other education-related organizations. 2. Affiliations with any corporations or business that do business with or intend to do business with a BC school district. 3. Any and all income, honorariums, and payment for service. 4. Any in-kind services or gifts from other organizations or corporations. 5. Participation in or attendance at activities organized by corporations. This to ensure that those in the most senior positions of responsibility and power in the school system handle their responsibility in a transparent, accountable manner.

A meeting was held and the following topics were discussed: status of classroom conditions; provision of stable adequate education funding; plan for reducing child poverty; support for curriculum change through in-service, resources and adequate funding; the development of respectful labour relations; plans to address issues faced by equity-seeking groups (ie., Aboriginal, LGBTQ, members of other minority groups); conflict of interest for school board officials and Ministry contractors.
