The Doctors of BC is currently working on five policy papers with the intent of public release and promotion to the government: 1. Family Caregivers:In October 2016 DOBC released a policy paper entitled "Circle of Care: Supporting Family Caregivers in BC". The paper contains recommendations to stakeholders, including government, aimed at increasing supports for family car givers; 2. Preventing Violence in Healthcare: The DOBC policy statement "Preventing Violence in Healthcare" was released in April 2016. The statement calls on government and stakeholders to ensure meaningful physician input into violence prevention activities in BC and makes recommendations on ways to improve safety for physicians. Since the release, the DOBC staff have been invited to provide feedback on the MOH's revision of "Framework to Prevent Violence in BC Health Care System". 3. Improving BC's Health System Performance: In January 2017 DOBC released the policy paper "Improving BC's Health System Performance". The paper contains recommendations to stakeholders, including government, aimed at better support and coordination of health system and quality improvements efforts and informs government and other stakeholders of the physicians' perspective on features and benefits of a robust measurement and continuous quality improvement culture in BC. 4. Professional Autonomy: In January 2017 DOBC released a policy statement that sets out what it means by the term "professional autonomy", including three fundamental principles that it encourages partners in health care to recognize, protect and support; 5. Psychological Safety in Health Care Teams: DOBC is developing a policy statement to address significant increase in the number of physicians being labeled as "disruptive" and subjected to disciplinary proceedings. The statement is likely to contain recommendations to Health Authorities and other stakeholders on psychological safety, appropriate language and definitions, and reforms to disciplinary procedures. This statement is likely to be released in mid to late 2017.
