The Society of Notaries Public of British Columbia is responsible for the education and admission of people who want to practice as a BC Notary. in order to become a BC Notary an applicant must meet certain criteria and then successfully complete a Masters Degree at SFU. The Society is also responsible for the governance of its members. The primary focus of the Society is protection of the public. The Society requires every member to have Professional Errors and Omissions insurance and the Society maintains a Special Compensation fund for the protection of the public. The Society was incorporated in the Province of BC in 1926 and the first Notary was commissioned by Governor James Douglas in 1868. BC Notaries have a Foundation that has contributed over 42 million dollars to legal aid and to Legal Service Society since its inception in 1986.
