Development, establishment, amendment or termination of any program, policy or decision

The BCMA is currently working on policy papers, statements and resolutions that it intends for public release and promotion to the Government. 1. Concussions: considering the impact of the pan-Canadian Concussion Guidelines on physicians and considering advocating for increased support for physicians with respect to return-to-learn and return-to-play guidelines. 2. Recently published an updated policy statement on dementia care in BC that reiterates a number of recommendations from the previous 2004 dementia paper and makes new recommendations in the areas of prevention, direct care hours in residential care, a palliative approach to care, and education/training. 3. Professional Autonomy: released a policy statement in January 2017 that sets out what we mean by professional autonomy, including three fundamental principles that it encourages partners in health care recognize, protect and support. 4. Psychological Safety in Health Care Teams: Released a policy statement in June 2017 that makes recommendations and commitments in four areas that work toward implementing policies and practices that promote psychological safety for physicians and all health care providers. The four areas are: supporting advocacy by physicians, promoting inclusive management practices, enhancing provider experience and quality improvement, and supporting fairness in dispute resolution systems. 5. Chronic Pain: Released a policy paper in 2017 recommending the Ministry of Health develop a Provincial Chronic Pain Strategy that supports access to multidisciplinary chronic pain services, including a list of actions government should prioritize in a Provincial strategy. 6. Physician Disaster Preparedness: Recently developed a policy paper addressing the role of physicians in disaster and emergency planning. 7. Return to Work: Developing a policy statement related to WSBC and return to work that will identify challenges faced by physicians and make recommendations related to spreading awareness of return to work, improving return to work processes and policies, and providing opportunity for physician training and education on return to work, including compensation for training skills. 8. Physician Burdens: Developing a policy paper that evaluates the cumulative impact of demands on physicians that become overly burdensome and contribute to physician stress and burnout, including recommendations and commitments intended to reduce the volume of administrative burdens on physicians, and off-set the impact of changes in the health system on physician work flow. 9. Physical Activity History: Passed a resolution supporting the inclusion of physical activity history within the vital sings section of electronic medical records system. 10. Preventing Frailty: Developing a policy paper that will look at commitments and recommendations to promote healthy aging and stop and/or delay the onset of frailty. 11. Physician Assistants: Support and advocacy for the establishment and deployment of physician assistants in BC. Advocates that PAs be recognized by the Provincial Government as a regulated profession with oversight by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC. 12. CPR in Schools: Passed a resolution recommending that CPR and AED training be part of the provincial secondary school curriculum. 13. Secondary Use of Health Data: Developing policy that will advocate for appropriate governance to be established prior to stakeholder engaging in secondary use of data. 14. Pedestrian Safety: Considering the development of a policy related to the promotion of pedestrian safety.
