| The Heart and Stroke Foundation is a registered volunteer-based Canadian health charity that leads in eliminating heart disease and stroke and reducing their impact through advancing research and its application, promoting healthy living and advocacy. The Foundation educates individuals about the prevention and management of heart disease and stroke and funds medical research regarding the causes of these conditions. Founded in 1952, the organization is a federation of 10 provincial foundations, led and supported by a force of more than 140,000 volunteers. Throughout its history, the Foundation has relied on donations from over 2 million Canadians. It receives no operational funding from government sources. In 2012, the Foundation spent more than $107 million on research, health promotion, and community programs. Since 1952, the Foundation has raised and spent more than $1 billion on heart and stroke research. |
